COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

N528: Gerontology Nursing Problems I. 3 Credits. This is the first of a two-course sequence that focuses on evidenced-based primary care diagnosis and management of common episodic/chronic problems encountered by older people and their social network in ambulatory and the community settings. Physiological, psychosocial, and pharmacological interventions are integrated into the wholistic care that incorporates age-related, cultural, family, and community variations.

N529: Gerontology Nursing Problems II. 3 credits. Pre-requisite: N528. This course will focus on a continuation of Gerontology Nursing Problems I with the health promotion, diagnosis and treatment of selected health problems of the older client. Application of theory and research to advanced practice roles and policy development is examined throughout the course.

N552: Role Development of the CNS. 2 credits. Pre-Requisites: N530. Students will compare and contrast the various roles of the clinical nurse specialist and evaluate those roles as they relate to their individual area of practice. Concepts of professional development are emphasized.

N553: Role Development of the NP. 2 credits. Pre-Requisites: N530. This course emphasizes professional role development of the nurse practitioner. Students will compare and contrast the various roles of the nurse practitioner and evaluate those roles as they relate to the student’s individual planned area of practice.

N554: Managed Advanced Nurse Practice. 2 credits. Pre-Requisites or co-requisites: N526, 552 OR 553. Students will develop a nurse practice portfolio/plan based on an analysis of the business aspects of health care delivery for solo and partnership arrangements in advanced practice nursing.

N563: Education in Advanced Practice. 1-2 credits. The course focuses on theories of teaching and learning as well as curriculum and program development and techniques of evaluation. The educator role of the advanced practice nurse in a variety of settings and with diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups is examined. Nurse practitioners take the course for 1 credit and attend the first 7.5 weeks. (NP student may elect to take the entire course). The Clinical Nurse Specialist students take the course for 2 credits and attend the full 15 weeks.

N567: Teaching Strategies. 2 credits. The course explores theory based teaching strategies designed to develop cognitive abilities, psychomotor skills, and affective qualities in learners from diverse backgrounds. Strategies and methods for the teaching of nursing content in a variety of settings are utilized. The use of different technological tools in nursing education is evaluated.

N597: Advanced Clinical Practicum I. 4 credits-180 hours, Advanced Clinical Practicum II. 5 credits-225 hours, Advanced Clinical Practicum III. 5 credits-225 hours. The focus of this course is to provide the requisite clinical experience required for certification as a Gerontology Nurse Practitioner or a Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist. Students will spend more than six hundred hours in a variety of settings focusing on care of the older client.
